NXP Rapid IoT Prototyping Kit

I didn't sign up for the roadtest, but I recently got one of these kits so I thought that I'd see how my experience compares to that of the roadtesters.

The Rapid IoT module packs a large array of sensors into a small package (2" x 2" x 1/2").  It includes wireless interfaces (BLE and Thread) and a small LiPo battery.

The kit includes the module and a short USB cable for power and programming and a Quick Start Guide.

The module comes pre-programmed with an Out-Of-Box (OOB) Demo program that allows you to quickly examine the module's capabilities.

Here's their quick video of the OOB Demo:

I found that the OOB Demo was sort of clunky i.e. had a number of issues that I'll cover in a separate post.  One of the notable omissions is that there is no way to power down the device with this program, so you always need to keep the device plugged into USB power or you'll always have a dead battery.  I think the expectation is that you'll will move on from this program quickly.

There are iOS and Android apps available and you can interface to the cloud via the WiFi on your phone/tablet.

I use an iPhone 6 and the connection to the Rapid IoT was straightforward but it also had issues.

Here's the connect screen for the BLE connection - they call it "Provisioning".

And here's a screenshot of the sensor display (I had the gyroscope disabled - so zero values).

I'll continue this is another post.
