Cannot add a comment from Safari on an iPad

iOS version: 14.8.1; Safari for that version of iOS.

Trying to enter a comment against a blog post from my iPad doesn't work.  From my iMac, I would see an edit box with formatting buttons and a comment button into which I could type; if I want to reply to someone's comment, I can hit the 'reply' button which will bring up an edit box, format buttons and a 'comment' button.

On the iPad, the edit box doesn't appear.  Under my name, is just a blank space into which I can't type anything.  If I hit 'reply' to a comment, a blank space appears with a flashing cursor, along with the iOS keyboard, and it appears I can type as the cursor advances as I do so.  However, there are no formatting buttons, no 'comment' button, no delineating lines around the edit box and the font is coloured white (on a white background.) If I tap outside that 'edit area' I cannot tap to go back into it - the cursor just never appears.

I tried signing out and signing back in again but no difference.
