Missing comment, yet it appears in Top Comments?

Hi,

At this blog post: /products/devtools/ni-labview/b/labview-challenge-blogs/posts/labview-challenge-a-course-in-labview-and-test-automation-blog-1

I see this:

image

However, I cannot see the comment by @cstanton anywhere further below. I thought the top comment was simply a copy of a comment further below in context along with all the other comments, but I cannot see it (maybe I'm going blind but I checked a few times!).

Have I missed it, or is it really missing? Is it a bug? Or have I simply not seen it but it's there? I clicked on any "View more" that I could find, but I still couldn't locate that comment.

I just thought I'd report it in case it's an issue.

Thanks everyone for the detailed checking with this. I've been able to reproduce this, and I've raised it with the development team.

Here, 'Best' appears to be filtering it out. 'Oldest' or 'Newest' reveals it. Perhaps give that a try your end ?

Definitely a weird one.. with the link you gave, I see your comment, plus one from Jan above yours. This is on the left in the screenshot below. However if I click on the original link, it appears to be missing your comment and Jan's beginning with "Should I apply?". I double-checked and both are at the default of sort by "Best" (I never change that default either).

However scrolling them both down, only one of them has those missing comments.

Which begs the question, is Best supposed to be filtering things out? If so, that's unexpected behavior (since most websites use "sort by", and not "filter by"). It doesn't make sense anyway since it was a "Top Comment" and yet not on a "Best" list.

I think this must be a bug.

I clicked on 'Oldest' and I could find that comment, but who knows if a different one is missing now : ( I don't really want to try working around this, or assuming that it is worked around, because from experience that may result in some other problem occurring later, if the root cause (whatever that is) is not fixed, or if I've mistakenly assumed that 'Oldest' is a complete fix when that may have an issue too that I cannot notice because I've not thoroughly tested in the way a tester might.

I'm just glad it's not just me, i.e. it is a repeatable issue if you too see the same thing when 'Best' is selected.

Yeh, I'm seeing the same as you.

Following the bare URL and the post disappears with the default 'Best' setting.

    Selecting 'Newest/Oldest' reveals it.

Following the URL with the comment ID in the URL Query and the comment is displayed with the default 'Best' setting.

Selecting 'Newest/Oldest' keeps it revealed, but that removes the comment ID from the URL Query and adds the Sort By / Sort Order entries.

Selecting 'Best' and the comment disappears again.

I was just trying to collect some more info about the behaviour for Christopher to pass on.

I too would normally debug further but didn't have time to do a thorough job so didn't want to half-debug, i.e. now that it's known reproduceable anyone who can troubleshoot further can make the thorough investigation.

Had a waste of a half hour just now, trying to reproduce a bug on a piece of equipment. It occurs just frequently enough to be irritating, and not frequently enough to be sure of how I caused it.

The two times the bug occurred today, I didn't capture it : ( And for the past half hour I cannot repeat it : (

Not sure if it is related issue or not but I've been noticing that I've been getting an increasing number of in-line 'View More' prompts appearing

    image

yet when you select it you just get the 'There are no more remaining comments.' prompt appearing

    image

I'm mentioning it here as it is happening on the page being referred to here and so may be caused by the comment filtering that appears to be occurring.

e.g. the 'View More' part of the code is counting Christopher's non-displaying comment but then 'There are no remaining comments.' part of the code is showing as a result of the comment having been 'filtered out' from display and then there is nothing left to display after that.

Know what you mean about chasing intermittent bugs. Spent over year chasing one which could randomly appear in the control system of any one of eighty plus venues at any time of the day but usually outside of normal working hours. So added complication of getting from home to work through road works, signing out of building access keys from security lodge, etc. before you could even get to the equipment to start figuring out what was going on, and all against the clock.
