  • Me and my friends (at the age of 12) built a small circuit with an 741 Op-Amp on a universal PCB. It was supposed to light an LED if an input voltage was above some level.

     

    In the field we found out that there was one wire connecting two pads instead of another pads. We had no soldering iron, so we held a metal nail in pliers, heated by a cigarette lighter.

     

    We managed to somehow desolder the wire, but we were not able to use the setup to solder the wire to a different location again image The insulation of the pliers was damaged by that procedure, of course...

    Full marks on the Macgyver type effort.

     

    I do volunteer work at a local school delivering lunch time physical computing sessions once a week. My name was mentioned in a meeting regarding, teaching problem solving skills. I rarely answer student questions until they describe what they have done, to troubleshoot the problem. At first some students were frustrated but they soon learned to trust themselves to make an attempt at solving their own problems. I am seeing a difference in their attitude as the session progress.

     

    My father died in a traffic accident when I was very young. Growing up in a single parent family was tough. I recall having a broken bike one summer day. All the other kids were riding down the street and my green banana bike was on it side with the chain off. The old ammo can in the front porch held my fathers tools. I knew some how, I would need to learn how to fix the bike.

     

    I wouldn't wish a fatherless experience on anyone as the path to becoming self sufficient. I do believe, young people today aren't given the opportunity to develop problem solving skills. What do you do, when you don't know what to do.

     

    I trust the fortitude you demonstrated at age 12 has given you great returns in life?

    I think I have always done things differently. Sometimes it is worth it, sometimes not. MacGyver was definitely an inspiration, as we were watching it with schoolmates on TV every day after school.

     

    I am the generation whose parents grew in the communist era. Import was very limited, resources were planned on a state level, but it usually meant a lot of the building materials, components and other things were unobtainable. Almost nothing was thrown away, because it might have been used later. People did everything they could themselves.

    Then you deserve additional koodo's for seeing past the states desire to limit its people industry for the benefit of the few.
