What is the Main Deterrent to Participation?

There are lots of reasons why members participate in Road Tests and Design Challenges and there are lots of reasons why they don't.

This poll explores what seem to be the main deterrents. What is the main reason you do not participate?

Or if you participate in some, why not more?

I'd like to add something. I've seen a few people talk about lack of confidence, maybe I'm not the right person, maybe there are better people, etc. I'm an author, I've written (in my name) two technical…

I stopped entering design competitions when I see some of the "Top Members" have applied That should not be a motivation to NOT enter. I was fortunate to talk with Christian DeFeo while I was in England…

I had to drop out of design challenges and complex events due to health issues. The spirit was willing, but I no longer could dedicate the time and effort in a timely fashion to justify participation.…

Not having enough time doesnt correspond to thinking it isnt worth the effort ...Should really be seperated

Even I wouldnt put so much negative spin on a poll selection!

Yes, it sounds more negative than intended. Not having enough time is an absolutely legitimate reality of life.

Ironically, most people who might check this box probably don't have time to do it....

Not having enough time doesn't correspond to thinking it isnt worth the effort

Strangely some of the excuses have been conflicts with other activities that require time.

I do know that Challenge timeframes slip (usually due to supply), which means those that might have had time available to commit are suddenly left squeezed.

There are others that would still struggle which is why the planning for a weekly blog is so important.

If you are a disciplined, experienced and been there before, you may be able to wing it.

However I have seen some that should fall into the category caught out when the item they needed wasn't available ... image

You also have some of these challenges delayed during the selection process.

There have been times when unexpected delays forced a project into a busy time, which made participation very challenging.

Plus you always have the unexpected events that take your time away.

True, but the opposite case can happen as well - you don't apply because the deadline is too tight and then the deadline gets extended after it is too late to apply.
