Poll: What Do You Think Is the Most Promising Semiconductor Material Being Utilized Today?

Silicon has been the tried and true semiconductor material for decades. With the advantage of being inexpensive, plentiful and relatively easy to manufacture, it's hard to beat silicon as the go-to semiconductor material for electronic components. But silicon has its drawback such as being brittle and not always easy to use for integrating components. But there are other materials already use or being introduced or being experimented with.

    I suspect that carbon nanotubes may explode onto the scene, creating faster greener ICs. MIT engineers build advanced microprocessor out of carbon nanotubes | MIT News

    There will not be one to rule them all. For high power semiconductors low junction resistance (Rds_on) will be important. For gates and logic, one one with highest electron mobility and switching speed…

    For high power semiconductors low junction resistance (Rds_on) will be important.

    For gates and logic, one one with highest electron mobility and switching speed to allow higher frequencies is going to be preferred.

     

    I am sure there are other materials with other properties for other applications.
