The first thing I thought of was dial-up modem ... hah ...
But I think a combination is the answer - it really depends on the situation. Sometimes you can't make noise ... other times, you just can't justify the power consumption, cost and form factor of a full colour graphics LCD display ... other times you can't let a warning pass by, so you're going to do everything you can to get someone's attention. It really depends.
I'm a visual guy - with the same attention deficit and distractability issues that plague many of us. Blinky lights are a must on pretty much everything, even if it has a display. A younger me may have added more buzzers, but older me doesn't hear them anymore. It might be selective hearing...
It mostly depends on the project and what sort of User Interface I want and the effort I'm willing to put in. Today's project is going to be mostly Audio so that is what I have chosen, but it also has an LED so I might use that as well.
