What kind of hardware would you like to see RoadTested?

We have a lot of different types of hardware in RoadTests & Reviews, however we tend to err on the side of electrical engineering and design engineers, are we right to do so?

Let us know so we can offer up the hardware that you want to see tested.

Something else: power electronics, sensors, converters ( dc-dc, adc, dac), opamps & instrumentation amp ICs.

The current offer of the Thermocouple connectors is a good example. Components tend to be much cheaper than scopes or other nice test gear - so the odd misfire won't matter as much. The problem is that…

I would like to see the new Raspberry Pi HD Camera featured on RoadTest Review.

Yikes. That Edison module is about the densest electronics module I've ever seen. Rework would take a whole new level of tools, microscopes and skills. image

Good point. I too have a box full of Intel Edison / Galileo / Microsoft stuff languishing on the "not likely to be revisited" shelf.

Good candidates to practice your rework skills. Remove all components and try to place them back. Hours of fun.

The edison and alike were a particular shame, some of them had potential.

Your statement is certainly true for some members such as yourself and those members don't need any added incentive.

There are lots of other perspectives and some members who are competent would feel it just isn't worthwhile.

    I sometimes do, sometimes don't.

Incidentally, you do an excellent job of testing components (and everything else).

    That's rough, isn't it?

I spent much effort to learn the Siemens IOT20XX family, based on Intel's IoT processor range. ....Training myself to build a custom Linux image from source, ..

Although Siemens has built an excellent product on top of that, and they committed to keep their devices alive for > 5 years, you can feel it's a dead end.

They know it and I know it. It was obvious from day 1 when the Intel communication was published.

It's the price to pay when dealing with new technologies.

At least, companies like Siemens provide a slow end. Many new initiatives these days, even commercial ones, die abruptly without a path forward.

Shout out here to TI who have created and sold a number of SensorTags and LaunchPads that were virtually (software/firmware/support) dead at release time. As if they had to meet their end-of-year bonus and then wander off.

I politely disagree. I think that excitement over a new electronic component or technology is a good incentive for good road tests. Regardless of the cost.

I'd say that some of the most expensive tests have resulted in a drama return-on-investment. Like cstanton, I'm ".... not going to provide a concise list though image"

Comprehensive road testing of a low cost component may not have much appeal to some members, even if they have the ability to do it, because it is a lot of work for a low cost item. It might be a bit easier if they could just sign up to test one aspect of the component and eventually have all the different aspects by different members combined into a more comprehensive road test, possibly by yet another member. It wouldn't hurt to include some swag with the road test item. I sometimes get unexpected swag for things I do on the site, which is very nice, but making it clear before hand would turn it into added incentive for some.
