Poll: Are You Directly or Indirectly Involved in Manufacturing Engineering?

I have a need to know or get an idea of what percentage of the element14 community is directly or indirectly involved in manufacturing engineering.

By directly involved I mean someone who works at a manufacturing or fab plan and is involved in engineering processes, designing machinery, or working in maintenance. Or your work for an integrator or third-party contract design firm and you go into the plant and install, troubleshoot, etc. plant machinery.

By Indirectly involved I mean someone in a support role. You may not be in the plant but you are providing some kind of support to an original equipment manufacturer or one of its customers.

Poll Question:  Are You Directly or Indirectly Involved in Manufacturing Engineering?

Thanks!

Randall

Really, a little of direct and a lot of indirect. We call it customization. It can be taking a piece of equipment with fixed louvers and replacing them with automatic louvers. It can be taking a bare engine…

I did some limited production runs of some of the devices I helped build.

Yes, I would agree with you. You are direct. Let me modify my definitions. A bit. Thanks for pointing it out.

By your definition, indirectly involved, because I'm in an engineering support role.  But I spend a lot of time in our manufacturing plants, so I wouldn't call it indirect.  We install and program the PLC, microprocessors, operator interfaces, and network equipment that helps manufacture the stuff.

Really, a little of direct and a lot of indirect.  We call it customization.  It can be taking a piece of equipment with fixed louvers and replacing them with automatic louvers.  It can be taking a bare engine and turning it into a complete power unit (controller, wiring harness, pump/generator/etc., enclosure).  Mostly one-of-a-kinds - although all very similar at the macro level.  Mostly what we do is service assembled equipment.
