Seeking Your Opinion: What Would You Like To Know About High-Speed Connectors?

Hi All.

 

We are planning a video on the topic of high-speed connectors. In the past these types of connectors were used primarily in high cost, Big Data equipment, and not necessarily in the toolbox of your average engineer. But today, we are seeing their use in a wider set of applications. We want the video to explore high-speed connectivity in this way. To do so, we wanted to ask your input first, as far as what would be discussed in the video.

  • It sounds interesting! Usually high-speed connectors are brilliant for system integration type stuff too, like attaching daughter-cards or even stacking boards. So much more convenient than flat-flex! They are nice for low-speed stuff too as a result : )

    I'm always interested in understanding the terms, and which to choose when (they have strange industry terms like "gatherability" etc as I understand, to do things like more easily align connectors as the integrator/assembler person brings the two boards together! How much misalignment is possible.

    Also, when connecting the high-speed signals, what things to look out for in connectors, to help with ESD damage prevention, which connectors are recommended for non-technical users to be able to easily connect (say an external plug-in board) versus those an engineer would be expected to replace.

    Also, usually I'm not interested in absolutely reducing space to a minimum, and am happier with reliability, so am curious what's the reliability of (say) 0.8mm pitch versus 0.4mm pitch, and the recommended connectors for physically larger boards. These are the kinds of things I'd be curious to learn about, but in general connector topics are always very interesting!

  • Has anyone engaged with this poll who's already familiar with high speed signalling? We're looking for someone to do a 'questions and answers' style webinar or event with molex - if anyone's interested?

  • Installation requirements and any special considerations that you need to be aware of in order to gain the benefits.

     

    The connectors are a buck each but you need the $500 tool to install them!

  • I would find it interesting to see the design details that make high speed connectors different from your average day connectors.
