Should we hide ratings?

You may have seen these on blogs/documents/content:

It allows you to rate the content on a scale of 1-5 out of stars.

 

I've heard good and bad reasons for keeping these (publicly) viewable and I'm looking into how we can do something about it. A lot of websites or social media sites simply allow you to 'like' content, or not and don't use a rating system like this.

 

It's partly a relic of the content management system that we use, Jive, but it's also something I'm concerned about for the next platform we use.

 

So let's have a decider.

Parents

  • I believe they are sometimes misused - probably without any conscious malice - but to the detriment of the original content creator. This is backed up by some recent discussions where a top member was having difficulty proving their skills competency to a prospective employer as their own rating was often marked down. Like many other members I don't pay much attention to it - unless the article is outstanding in which case I'll give them 5/5 or, as  mentions, where it is required for a badge image.

     

    The issue I see against star system use comes from it being anonymous; whereas comments are not. Therefore comments are much better IMO as they can be discussed, solutions found (maybe the article gets amended by the OP),  other members get opportunity to comment accordingly, maybe the comment poster realises they were wrong and make a comment to that effect. Anyway putting your name against the comment usually keeps the conversation constructive and polite and therefore benefits everyone.
