All props to Shannon, but a tip-o'-the-hat to the develops of QAM: (from MAGNACOM)
QAM Origins and History
QAM was invented in the late 1950’s and gained interest in 1960 following a paper published by C.R. Cahn, describing combined phase and amplitude modulation system. One of the earliest reports of the actual construction of a QAM system came from Bell Labs in 1971 (by Salz, Sheenhan and Paris). QAM had relatively low practical interest until 1974, when two papers were published on the topic (Foschini, Gitlin and Weinstein; and Thomas, Weidner and Durrani).
