Pellets stove burner

Hi all.

 

I have a pellet stove burner in my house. It has some intelligence meaning it will sleep once the room is warm enough, as you set on the control panel on the stove, but the intelligence is highly overrated. The correct way to describe this is once the area close to the burner is hot enough, it is time to turn off, which means when it is very cold outside my burner gets up to decent warm then turns off and it gets quite cold again. After some research I found that you can hook up a thermostat to it, it has a plus and minus connection on the back, looks like a speaker connection. I have found a few thermostats but they are quite costly, over $100.

 

So I started to think, dangerous I know, but why not make one out of raspberry pi or arduino. I have ordered a temperature meter.

 

My question is, if anyone can assist. Is this as simple as reading from the temperature meter, which is very simple and just make the same output on the analogue output ? Can it be that simple ?

 

Any information on how these temperature thermostats work in connection to the pellet stove burner. My stove burner is called Karolina and I think it is extraflame. I know it is Italian, if you think it is important I will of course add more information, I just don't have it with me right now

    For me the first things to do (before do/buy anything) is to find information about how thermostats works and what kind of signal it send to the stove because if you send to it the wrong signal in the worst case you can burn something and to repair it you will spend a lot more than the 100$ that you're trying to save, you have to be sure at 100% that the stove/thermostat works that way. If this is one of you're first project I suggest you to don't do this, because the risk of damaging something is quite high (I think), me too I wouldn't do something like that.

    I'm telling you this because a friend told me of a person that using arduino tried to modify his car's conditioner using arduino and he obviously burned all.

    I also think that a raspberry is overkill to control only the temperature, and also require a lot more power than arduino(or a standalone atmega) to run.

    Thanks Stefano. I talked to a coworker who knows this stuff, he makes his own arduino type boards (with mips cpu) as an example. He quickly steered me right and gave me a lecture on how the thermometer could be connected, given many wide options, different ways to communicate and my head started spinning.

     

    I could not have been more far off on how this thing works and obviously have a long way to go before tempting to do something like this. It would just be so cool to make some useful stuff with the arduino image

    Yes, it is very cool, I love creating new things too (or try to create them image)

    Start with simple projects image, they are the best way to learn, good work image
