Searching for parts LARGE 7 segment displays

Former Member
Former Member over 14 years ago

I'm working on a clock to be run off an arduino. I have most of my hardware down, including an LED controller chip, an RTC breakout board, etc. I have hooked up some 7 segment LEDs and am working on the code, but I have one big problem:

My project calls for very large displays. specifically, I'm looking to match the displays here, which look to be 7" (5.25" character height) dual character displays. they also interestingly have commas in the corner (instead of the decimal point on most 7 segment displays).

I've looked on various sites (octopart, jameco, many many more) but so far havent come up with many options. I found a 7" single character on sale at a couple sites (including element14), but it isn't a great match. I know there must be more variety made, as I see these all the time for scoreboards and such.

Does anyone know where I might find these displays?

Every large 7-segment LED display I've seen uses rows of normal-size LEDs for each segment, probably hooked up in series and driven through constant-current voltage-boost LED drivers. You can use plastic…

It might be custom to the people who built the display.

But since you are making everything yourself, turn the decimal point into a comma. Make a plastic comma to put over the LED in the decimal point, is a simple way. Or a mask to go over the display.

    Large displays

Try the KINGBRIGHT - SC40-19SRWA - DISPLAY, SEVEN SEGMENT, 100MM, RED

    It is about 4" tall.

    Or try this one.

The robotshop one is the one ive found that really fits the bill, but its still not close enough for my liking.

I just keep getting the feeling im missing some industry supplier or something, because I know there are plenty of these displays around.
