To avoid this being a 'Me too' post, I would say that the Uno is a great board as the others have said, but i'm still happily tinkering away on my Duemillanove boards. Not sure on your location, but you may also want to look at the other options around, I'm thinking the Nanode if you want inbuilt network availability without having to buy a (relatively) expensive networking shield.
Also, be careful, it is addictive
