You can do exactly that with this book that was published November 9, 2011. Harold Timmis wrote "Practical Arduino Engineering". Of course, all the geekier bookstores have it, plus you can buy it online at Amazon.com. The publisher has the full description of the book up on their web site along with a downloadable .zip file full of interesting sketches (xxx.pde) for the Arduino IDE and other support files to help with the projects in the book.
HaroldT's newest book is scheduled to be published in January 2013 but is available now as part of Apress's ebook Alpha Program. It is titled "Arduino Adventures: Escape from Gemini Station". Arrgh, matey, sounds like a spacefaring frollick with bootiful treasure to be found!
