I think you will probably need to provide a little more detail to get a complete answer, like what sort of distance are you talking about, what sort of conditions etc ?
Two things that jump to my mind is either a PIR or an ultrasonic distance sensor, but without more details i'm not sure how applicable these suggestions are.
