Arduino Board "Yun" plugs into the cloud

nlarson
nlarson over 12 years ago

I recently read an article on EEtimes.comabout an Arduino board that will plug into the cloud, and will also hopefully, make it easier for people to develop complex web applications.  According to the article, the "Yun is the first of a family of low cost, low power Ardunio cards that run Linux and Wi-Fi" The product will be available in June and priced at $69.

What do you think?  Is this a product you MUST have, or one you can probably live without?

Hi Nicole, Thanks for sharing! I like it! I'm currently working on a data logging greenhouse automation project and the plan is to connect via bluetooth to get some rough data dumped to a terminal window…

Glad it was useful info., Nico! Your project sounds really interesting - hopefully you don't have to wait too long to try out the YUN to get it into your project!

I did get a chance to see the Yun board from Massimo Banzi at Maker Faire Bay Area: I was a bit confused at first as to exactly what its purpose was, but I have a clearer idea after reading the Arduino…

    Hi Nicole,

    Thanks for sharing!

    I like it!

I'm currently working on a data logging greenhouse automation project and the plan is to connect via bluetooth to get some rough data dumped to a terminal window.

Given that my greenhouse is easily within the range of my router, a WiFi board would let me get that information through a standard browser easily from anywhere, and it would be a lot prettier to look at!

It might be worth the upgrade once they release it image

    Cheers,

    -Nico

I just did some more looking around, and noticed that wifi shields are nearly as much as the whole Yun is. Having it all in one package at that price is a nice step ahead.

I found this Arduino blog post with more information too: http://blog.arduino.cc/2013/05/18/welcome-arduino-yun-the-first-member-of-a-series-of-wifi-products-combining-arduino-with-linux/?utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=twitterfeed

It sounds like it is set up to bridge between the Linux that's running on the one chip and the Arduino Atmega chip. So it will be very interesting to see if a little web server could be set up on that Linux chip that can get info from the Arduino inputs somehow.

June is only a few weeks away too... image

I was a bit confused at first as to exactly what its purpose was, but I have a clearer idea after reading the Arduino blog post (which Nico links above).  I think the success will depend on if the "bridge" between the Arduino sketches on AVR and Linux on the ARM is simple enough for novices to understand.  The price is also a bit of a turn-off but folks haven't seem deterred by the Arduino "premium" yet.
