Help on how to get information from the internet

I am required to get information from the local gov website for the latest weather update using my arduino ethernet shield ( to be displayed on a LCD ). I have tested my device using arduino coding example ( Webserver for Ethernet and Hello World for the lcd display ) which means both is working properly. I can't seem to find any information on how i can get just the information of the weather to be displayed on the LCD display ( 16x2 ). Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    I am not sure Arduino is the best platform for what you wish to do. If you used an platform running Linux (e.g. BeagleBone Black or Raspberry Pi for example), then you could quite easily write up something to retrieve the web page and pull out the information you need. For example:

    wget bbc.co.uk/weather
grep headline index.html

    Example output for today:

    <p class="headline" lang="en-GB">Cloudy and dry, but wind and rain in northwest later.</p>

    Here is an example for a web client using Arduino

     

    Arduino - WebClient

     

    You'll need to make the request, parse the return, the print the string to your lcd.

     

    It should be pretty easy, depending on the format returned from the website.

    Hey Mike,

     

    Thanks for the link provided. I have take a look into it, as i am still a beginner when it comes to programming, how do you actually print the data from the internet?

    Well, in the example I linked to, they are reading the response from the http request into a character, then printing that out until there is no more data. You would probably want to read the received data into a buffer of some sort (an array of char, maybe), at that point you can start to treat the data as a string.

     

    You would then need to write some code to analyze the data in your array to isolate the data that you would like to print.

     

    Once you have determined the data that you would like to print, you would provide that data in place of the hello world string that you provided to the lcd in the lcd demo.

     

    The topics in c that you will probably need to research are:

    Arrays and pointers

    string manipulation

    regular expressions

     

     

    This conceptually is no different than a demo that would allow you to read data from the keyboard and print it out. If you are that new to programming that is where I would start.

     

    Write a program that accepts keyboard input and writes it back out after you have received some terminating character.

     

    Modify that program to write it out to the LCD.

     

    Modify that program to read from the internet instead of the keyboard.

     

    After that you should have gained all the skills required to complete your project.
