Microsoft seem to be giving away Intel Galileo boards

They probally very favorable rates from Intel Microsoft can be a very generous company at times. In the past they have given me free licences to their software, given me free hardware not only from their own brands but from others too. I remember coming home one day and their being a fairly expensive Logitech Webcam sitting on my doorstep from Microsoft with a letter of thanks because I had reported a few issues with version of MSN Messenger back in the day.

Yeah sure it will cost them to get people interested in using their software but they are betting on future integration. They are also late to the party, pick up pretty much "IoT device" today and its probally running some form of unix if not its own custom OS.

Anyways I signed up, if something comes of it it does, if not oh well. I will probally forget about this until a knock at the door asking me to sign for something.

Seems legit.

I wonder what the SDK consists of.  The Microsoft news release, dated 6 July 2014, states:

Our first SDK release in the spring of 2014 will give you a chance to look at our new software, including an incomplete prerelease of our software and API surface.

That's rather different from saying that the SDK can be used to create useful software.  I'll be interested in reading what people say when they actually receive something from MS.

JMO/YMMV: The impression I'm getting from the MS news release is "OMG we're going to be left out of the Internet of Digital Things so we'd better do something".  Perhaps giving away boards is primarily to determine the level of interest.  If it's high enough, they'll throw together enough SDK to be useful and then "Bob's" your uncle.

I signed up a while ago. They said I was accepted and would let me know when they shipped my board.

I guess a while ago was a bit misleading. Monday morning was when I signed up. But the way this week has been going, I thought it was last week sometime.

The text of the email I received was as follows :

"Thank you for signing up for the Windows Developer Program for IoT.  We’ll let you know when your kit has shipped."

I don't doubt they'll send it, I just don't know when.
