Suggestion on Sensors to be used for Leak Detection in Pipeline

Hi guys,

I am new here. I would like to have your kind help to assist me in my project. Actually, I was currently doing my Final Year Project for my study in university.

My project title is design + setup a tool which capable of detection and location of leak in designed pipeline.

To make it short, now I'm in the phase of identification and selection of components for my device.I would glad to have your opinions in which preferable type of sensors to be purchased in my project

The components selection criteria are as attached :

Basically I want to find for sensors using for :

1. Leak detection in pipe (acoustic sensor)

2. Leak location in pipe (accelerometer/GPS sensor)

3. Tracking device in pipe (accelerometer/GPS sensor)

4. Different pressure as leak occurred in pipe (differential pressure sensor)

Your attention and help is highly appreciated.

Thank You !image

    Aiman,

you do not state the characteristics of the pipe work system in which you wish to detect leaks, i.e. the pipe diameter, length and material, the gas or liquid type, pressure and viscosity. Is the pipe on the surface or buried?  Does the gas or liquid have a detectable odour?  Is the gas or liquid hazardous or corrosive?  Can the sensor be invasive in the pipe?  Is the pipe naturally subject to movement?

All of these factors will play a critical part is selecting suitable sensors.  As you mention GPS I would imagine you are looking at large pipe work system, rather than in say a small building.

    Mr bobcroft,

thank for the reply. image yup I forgot to mention the pipeline specs. There are:

    imagePipeline diameter : 4 inch || Length : 5 meter

imageNavigation through hydraulic/water flow as it is a free floating device - propelled by pump

imageThe pipe is on the surface (actually it is a pipe loop with some inclinations angle). It is constructed for the experiment purpose.

imageNo detectable odor as it is water flow

imageNo hazardous or corrosive liquid/gas used

imageThe designed pipe is on the lab and used to test the tool capable of detection and location of multiple 'designed' leaks. The tool will run + floating in the pipe upon launch and retrieve at the end of loop..

imageI'm not really sure if GPS is the best sensor to locate the device during the run. What would your say?

Awaiting for the reply(also from other viewers) image

    Thank you.
