How to Use Current and Voltage Sensors on Domestic supplies - Worldwide?

I have been working on an Arduino project to measure current and voltage on my domestic electrical supply here in the UK.

1. AardEnergy – Kick Off - a new project

I plan to use a Current Transformer which I can place on the meter cable and a voltage transformer I can plug into a wall socket and these signals will be processed with a meter chip AD7753. The CT will be attached like this:

And the voltage will be measured with a plug in Tx like this:

The question is this, will everyone worldwide be able to use the same approach? You can I hope buy the CT from Amazon say and buy a local plug in transformer. I ask this as the Evaluation board for the ADE7753 chip shows this arrangement for a USA connection:

and it also states:

So it sounds like there as 2 phases in a USA domestic supply, is that so? Can you use a clip on CT in the US?

 

What about in other countries?

    I suppose eventually it might not matter when they get IoT-ized and no need for the meter guy to physically check, but not sure when UK electricity companies plan to do that. Or maybe new developments…

    Hi,

    If you are looking to monitor all the power used in the Mains arrangement here in the US it is a little complicated. We typically use a mix of 115 VAC and 230 VAC appliances in our homes. All the small appliances use one or the other of the 115 V Lines of of the Neutral while our stoves, air conditioners, water heaters, and clothes dryers go directly across the 230 VAC Lines without using the Neutral. Therefore it is possible to have different current at any one time in each of the three wires that feed the home. Imagine we have a 10 A load between L1 and Neutral, a 5A load between L2 and Neutral and a 20A load between L1 and L2. I know it is possible to monitor this as the Power Companies obviously do it with their Wattmeters I suspect that it involves integration of current transformers on L1 and L2.  Sorry I can't be of more help than to point out a potential problem>
