Robotics requires many disciplines such as electronics, mechanics and software. Although you can specialize in one discipline, it is extremely useful to be knowledgeable in all three of these disciplines. The demand for software is larger than hardware and always will be (because each piece of hardware can have numerous software applications) but you will be far more successful in robotics if you also understand the hardware.

I skipped a couple of years of high school to jump into engineering at university, but I wouldn't recommend this - it put me at a disadvantage. It is much better to get a head start and learn the material before your classmates.
