Arduino for in-car system

Hi there

I'm new to Arduino and I'm going to be using it for a project at university.

I will be using the Arduino to record speed, location and other such data for a car that will be going round a track. I believe I will need some kind of GPS shield for this, could someone point me in the direction of a good one?

Also, we would like to relay this information to the driver using some kind of screen/touch-screen shield. Would this be possible? If so, what would you recommend we use?

Finally, which Arduino board would be best to use for this project? Obviously it has to be compatible with the shields that we would be using.

TIP: Have You concidered accessing the OBD2 connection? There is a wealth of information that can be accessed in a modern car. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OBD-II_PIDs for an overview.

Sorry, I should've mentioned that we are building the car ourselves. Therefore it will be quite simple in that it won't have any OBD connections.

Could I use some form of GPS shield?
