Arduino long range communication???

Dear community,

I need to develop a long range (5 kilometers) communication system with two arduinos. I've used Digi Xbee Pro 2.5 modules but communication is not good enough. I would like to know what another posibilities I have.

A directional antenna with a boosted power output will extend WiFi over several kilometers. It's a practice already done today.

Start there.

If line of site is possible, try infrared or laser communication.
