Arduino long range communication???

Dear community,

I need to develop a long range (5 kilometers) communication system with two arduinos. I've used Digi Xbee Pro 2.5 modules but communication is not good enough. I would like to know what another posibilities I have.

If you are doing this in a setting where internet is available, you could try that route maybe?
