The Constrains of Arduino?

Former Member
Former Member over 13 years ago

I am somewhat a complete noob to the world of technical enginerring and design. The Arduino projects that I have seen on the net have really inspired me and I want to get cracking on some of my own projects asap. However, I have a question as to the limitations/constrains of what can be done with the Arduino. Can you take a part an appicance (for example a DVD player) and use the components to recreate something else? Or do you have to use components that are 'compatible' with the Arduino?

There are many sources in my local area that throw away many electrical applicances. If instead I can use the junk as part of my projects, that can open up much more possibilities.

Anything is "compatible" with Arduino. You just need to remember the physical limitations of the Arduino itself and make proper compensations. For example the Digital outputs on an Ardunio are limited to 40milla-amps so obviously you can't drive a 10 amp washing machine motor with it directly, but you can drive a relay or MOSFET that in turn drives the motor. If you haven't already found it, http://www.arduino.cc/

So YES, re-use those old electronics and components!
