Arduino as a CAN Bus controller

I have a wild project that involves interfacing to a auto (car) CAN Bus. ( actually 2 Can buses) I need to add 3 inputs of analog data into the bus. Beyond the CAN bus requirements for sending messages etc, can I use an Arduino chip as a node controller??

I see several projects and shields using MCP2515 controller and MCP2551 transceiver chips, maybe Google up Arduino and those part numbers for ideas. As an aside, whoever named that bus standard was really trying to destroy their chances of success on the search-driven internet.
