Serial monitor behaves differently on Windows vs Mac

kjhart0133

A sketch I wrote recently uses Serial.write to display the value read from a potentiometer.  This sketch worked fine on my Mac and displayed correct values on the serial monitor.  When I loaded the exact same sketch onto a Windows platform, instead of displaying the numerical value from the pot, I got ASCII characters.

I have limited access to the Windows machine (I'm teaching a group of fifth graders how to use the Arduino) and haven't been able to spend a lot of time debugging this issue.  Any hints would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Kevin H.

Nico, I loaded up CoolTerm on my Mac and it works fine. Thanks for the pointer. It's much nicer than the default terminal window that comes with the Arduine IDE (Shift-Cmd-M). CoolTerm doesn't disappear…

You asked for persistent serial port monitor.  I guess you could try Termite 2.6 to see if it will do the job.

Thanks, Mr. Billabott.  I'll try Termite 2.6 as you suggest.  I won't be able to get to it until later today, but I'll let you know how I make out.

Apparently Termite 2.6 is a Windows tool and I have a Mac.  I'm looking around for a similar app for the Mac.  The school uses Windows, but I don't have daily access to the school machines.

I've been using CoolTerm for Mac, and it seems to work fine with Arduino (just tried it 10 seconds ago)

    Cheers,

    Nico,

I loaded up CoolTerm on my Mac and it works fine.  Thanks for the pointer.  It's much nicer than the default terminal window that comes with the Arduine IDE (Shift-Cmd-M).  CoolTerm doesn't disappear when I upload to the Arduino, but you do need to "disconnect" it before you can upload a sketch, and then "connect" back up once the sketch is finished uploading.  I suppose this is just the way it has to be.  Not a big deal.

Thanks again to Nico and Billabott for all the fine responses.
