Some advice with the Mayhew MUX shield & a Ruggeduino (Arduino UNO R3 clone) board please

Hello,

I am looking for some advice with the Mayhew MUX shield & a Ruggeduino (Arduino UNO R3 clone) board.

http://mayhewlabs.com/products/arduino-mux-shield

http://ruggedcircuits.com/html/ruggeduino.html

I am using the Mayhew Lab Digital Input code examples as a starting point to figure out how the shield actually works.  The only changes to the example code have been setting the Serial Monitor baud rate to 9600 (should not affect the code) and disabling MUX 01 & 02 (I just commented them out).  When I run the code and with the pushbutton wired as below, I get an ON/HIGH condition on MUX 00-0 & 01 without pressing the button.  It will than indicate an OFF/LOW condition when I press the button.  Push button is a N.O. & tested.  If I move the wires to any of the other position on MUX 00, same condition appear.  I have wired this all-different ways with no change.  How can MUX 00-1 be turned on when there is nothing physically connected to it?  If I move the pushbutton to another location, I always get an indication on whatever location I have wired and the next position.  Obviously, I am doing something boneheaded.  Can anybody give me a clue on what I am doing wrong?
