Arduino Engine Spark Detection

Hello,

 

I'm looking for a way to measure RPMs on a small engine (Briggs & Stratton Vanguard V-Twin), We've previously used a TinyTach on it, where there was a wire wrapped around one of the spark plug wires, and another grounded to the engine.  I've read about ways to measure RPM's using markings/magnets on the crank, but I'd like a setup similar to the TinyTach, only problem is that I have found no documentation on how to do this thus far.  Does anyone have any ideas?

    Some do it with sensing the H.Voltage, you can also do it by looking at the L.Voltage (i.e. 12 volts), which is decidely less painful.....

    If you search around on the web for schematics of transitorized ignitions or even transistor assisted ignitions, you should be able to use the interface methods from one of these.....

    I found this .pdf, which should give you a good start, but there are many more:-
