Use Serial1 port to shift serial to || data that in turn will drive SPLC780D LCD

Hi,

I am working with Arduino Mega which monitors an electronic test bench. I have used all I/O except for the serial1 port and SDA ports. Currently transieve data B/W processing and the mega. I would like to now include a 40x4 LCD dispalay that is capable of displaying the information wanted. Can I use serial1 port to load a shift register that'll drive the LCD display? I've attached a ppt, the last page shows the LCD display that I'd like to include.

Thanks,

Keith

Adafruit has a bunch of 20x4 displays http://www.adafruit.com/category/63_96 with associated tutorials on how they are hooked up and driven. 40x4 would be quite large and probably not as common.  I guess what you need to consider is your custom character set, possibly scrolling/buffer space and if the libraries to drive it support scrolling. You might want to look at their I2C backpack to reduce the number of pins to drive any character display or the graphic display OLED/LED panel options.  Good luck.
