can Arduino run on a Chromebook?

A friend asked me the other day if the Arduino IDE can be run on an Chromebook. My first answer is no, but I thought I'd ask the community if such a thing is possible. I myself am not familiar with the Chromebook; I don't know if it even has USB ports, so I'm really not qualified to answer this question.

Does anyone out there know if this is a possibility?

I installed Ubuntu on my Samsung Google Chromebook so that I could do just what you mentioned. If you don't mind unix, then give it a try. There are quite a few links out there for installing Ubuntu to a Chromebook, and there are several links on how to install the Arduino IDE once you have Ubuntu installed. The only thing that I have found to be a little bothersome is that the serial port keeps getting reset so that it is not writeable. I have to keep going in and updating the dev/ttyACM0 to 777.
