Arduino Mini A000087 programmed as a stop watch and attached to an LCD display, any ideas?

Hello

My name is Sarah, I am a 17 year old Technology student who is attempting to develop an electronic stop watch for my Product Design project.  I have some expereience of using Circuit Wizard's Genie PIC system.  However this does not have the range of commands needed for a stop watch.   I have looked at traditional analogue designs such as LM555 & MM74C926 etc.  However I am thinking using Arduino, does anyone know or have any advice suggesting an Arduino board such as the Arduino Mini A000087 which may be programmed and attached to an LCD display?  The mini is of a suitable size to a traditional sports stop watch PCB.

Thank you.

Sarah
