How to time three events

Hi,

I am totally new to Arduino programming. Could someone please explain how to do following.

I want to read the code from ir receiver ( I have figured out this part) and if that code say is A , B or C. I want to record the time when was A, B and C occurred. Then compare these three times and pick the minimum time. Could you please guide me how to perform this?

    I am assuming you have the correct code wrapped in a function call and since you have the basic code running you know a bit about the arduino language.

     

    You can use a function millis() to measure time duration. Click HERE to go to the reference page.

    Now you can simply check for the event either A or B or C is received and store the times in different variables or variable arrays to store multiple events. This is simple as:

    if(irDecode()=='A'){
         A_time = millis();
    } else if(irDecode()=='B'){
         B_time = millis();
    } else if(irDecode()=='C'){
         C_time =millis();
    }

     

    In the above code, replace the conditions for the 'if' statements with your function for reading the code from ir receiver. There are a dozen ways to do the above but for starters it would be simpler to understand.

    As Inderpreet has indicated.

    Under examples there is  "BlinkWithoutDelay" which IMO is not the right name but it shows the use of Millis().

     

    Two things to note :-

    1. Use a 'unsigned long int' rather than the normal 'int' for any variables that will use the Millis() time.

    2. Always subtract the stored time from the currrent time to avoid any rollover issues. (which is unlikely in your case but good practice)
