Reading LPG gas meter

Hello Everyone!

I want to read the LPG gas meter from Arduino code, and then wanted to store the reading into database using java code. Right now I am comfortable with java code, but could'nt found the help regarding LPG gas meter reading. It will be greatful if you people share  your helpful comments, links and code snippets.

    Anurag,

                   The only way you can get a reading from a gas meter is by some non invasive process.  If the meter is an electronic type i.e. with a LCD display then there is no way I know of to extract a reading.  On an analog natural gas meter, and I assume the analog LPG meter will be the same,  there are a series of numbered dials called the index.  These dials rotate to show the gas used.  On most meters the '0' digit has a silver circle around it.  It is possible to detect this silver circle with a reflective sensor stuck on with blue tac.  Thus you can count the number of revs of this particular index wheel which is the smallest increment of the meter.  The actual meter readings are taken left to right on the index dials.  If you use something like an Arduino to count the pulses from the sensor then you can compute gas usage.  There are a number of references to similar ideas the Net.  Try and Google something like @monitoring a gas meter.  The information I have given has not been tried by me personally and is based on gas meters found in the UK.
