5x5 3W LED RGB matrix

Hi, I'm new here image

I'm planning to make the matrix using 15 N-channel logic level MOSFETs (three MOSFETs for each color in each LED), and 5 P-channel MOSFETs. The problems is, I can't seem to find a P-channel MOSFET (logic level) for a reasonable price.

It seems that the P-channel MOSFETs are a lot more expencive than the N-channel ones, what is the reason for this?

Does anyone know where I can find cheap P-channel logic level MOSFETs? Preferable a TO-220 packedge, I'm soldering them on a protoboard.

regards, Bjarne

I just did some digging and it seems the P channel ones are less available, not to sure of the reason but typically high side control is harder than low side to do as your typically switching voltages way in excess of the logic supply and this is typically gnd referenced based

you can use a reg P channel fet and augment it with an N channel driver or a simple NPN transistor to make life easier

refer to my blog about driving fets here: for some alternative driving tips http://www.element14.com/community/groups/internet-of-things/blog/2014/08/05/drive-big-things-with-added-safety-opto-isolators

if you don't need the isolation then you can substitute the opto darlington with a simple 2n2222 or similar

Hi there! And thanks for very helpfull answer.

I watched your movies, and they was very helpfull. I did som re-planning, and came up with a possible solution. I'm going to use regular P-channel MOSFETs, with NPN-transistors as you suggested. I made a eagle scetch of the layout:

    (Behold! My pretty eagle-scetch image)

    image

To get the nessesary -5V I would think I would need a second, smaller, 5V power supply (I think I got one laying around image ), and connect the GND to Vcc of the main PS. Then i would get a negative 5V potensial from the Vcc of the smaller PS, right? If there is an easier way to do this I'm open to suggestions image

Just to mention, each LED usses about 1A (350mA for each colour). so the P-channel MOSFETs will have a load of maximum 5A, and the N-channel MOSFETs will have a load of aprox. 1.7A.

From what I can see on my cell it looks good

Test on a small scale first to confirm correct switching performance etc, then go from there

Good luck and let us see the results

    Regards

Btw, for the low side I would consider a chip with multiple drivers inside to simplify the BOM and your wiring

For instance a ULN2003 or the FET equivalent (yes there is a get version) you get 7 drivers in one 16 pin DIP

Ignore my last comment, I missed the bit about the current requirements , those chips max out around 600mA

For the - 5v you should consider a charge pump from a pin on the controller, you don't need much current and it would be cheaper than a second psu
