read/wight atmega8a already present on a board

hey guys looking for some help i wanted to mod an old sat receiver i had around the house, and a broken screen tablet to make a media center out of them, with remote control and everything, when i opened up the sat receiver a Humax DIGI+C2 to my surprize the front panel with the buttons actually runs on a ATMEL ATMEGA8A chip. i was thinking i could actually use this board directly, but i am having trouble finding out if and how to read the present code on the chip and how to tell the difference, which is the negative and positive leads due to all the pull down resistor present on the board. i would really appreciate some advice and help as my electronics skills are at a beginner's level.

    Google for the data sheet on this. The code would be hard to read/interpret even after several years of programming since I do this for a living. How about using a Raspberry Pi with XBMC OS to get a media centre for less than 50 dollars. I have done this with less than 1 hour to setup including downloading NOOBS software on a SD card from the web. The forum has great support if you need directions or help. Later you could add the hardware using GPIO pins and interface with the ATMEL ATMEGA8A chip.

    I was contemplating doing a video on just that topic, I did one a while back on setting up Raspbian, this will be the next in a possible series

     

     

     

    Setting up a PI B+ as an XMBC machine from fresh to done (Should be about a 1/2hr video), do you think there would be the interest ?
