I'm building a serial display LCD project on my Arduino (using the serial monitor to write and send text) after connecting everything, it still wont work. The LCD with light but nothing will come up on it if I type something in the Serial Monitor. Does anyone know what is wrong?

We might be able to help more if you included your code, a diagram of some sort showing how it is hooked up, and perhaps the model number of the LCD. As it stands right now, there is not enough information…

Jak, As someone else said we really need to know the type of serial to LCD module you have and a look at your code.  There are at least 3 variants of the I2C serial LCD modules.  One of the best sources of information is at www.yourduino.com, have a root around on the site wiki.  I would set up the Arduino to sent some simple text to the LCD display at least then you know, if it works, that the issue is with the serial input side.  Yo need to check that you have the correct address for the I2C module in your code.  If the display lights up then it is at least receiving power but as Doug suggested check the contrast setting.  Also check the you have the same baud rate set in the Arduino code that the serial monitor is set up for.

Additionally you could set up your Arduino to echo back to the serial monitor any characters that it receives or maybe set it up to turn on the LED on pin 13 if it receives a certain character.  These suggestions are to ensure that your Arduino is receiving the serial data.

Fault finding and debuging is easiest if you break down the problem to simple stages and then prove each stage individually.
