Performing text to speech is tough for an arduino, but it has been done.
If you combine this with an ultrasonic distance sensor, it could "tell" you how far you are from the wall in a dark room, or if you are blind.

Yeah Douglas, I know what you mean because, I am currently worked on 3 robots in which used the Ultrasonic Sensor for the avoidance of obstacles.
