Arduino Get Commands From ESP8266

Hello there,

 

Hope you all good. As I said on others post of mine i am working on a project for a house automation system that am designing... I want to ask a questions about our favorite microprocessor Arduino. Before i go to the market and buy the other stuff i need (actually the esp8266 and some other sensors) i wanted to ask>>? If i connect a relay board(8 relays)  on the arduino (mega) and connect an esp8266 on it am i going to be able to send commands via Internet to control the relays? (yes i know there are board with onboard esp8266 and relays) but i want to control more than relays.

  • Short answer: No you cannot do this directly.

     

    Medium answer: As per above... but... yes, it is possible once you've configured your home router to allow incoming commands to be directed to the ESP8266 on your LAN and you have subscribed to a Dynamic DNS service, such as DynDNS for example, that keeps track of your changing home router IP address.

     

    Longer answer: As per above... but... you do not want to do it that way as not recommended for a raft of reasons (search online for all the security risks). Instead you need to look at using a cloud service, such as an MQTT broker for example, which your ESP8266 will need to subscribe to. Then you can "publish" or send commands to this MQTT broker (instead to trying to communicate directly to your home router) and your commands/message are then redirected to the ESP8266 for you (this is achieved so long as the ESP8266 remains connected/subscribed to the broker service).     I forgot to add this into my original comment, as it is, in my opinion anyway, a worthy cloud-based option in its own right... and that is Google Firebase. It is a derivative of Pub-Sub architecture, done in a clever way. Google Firebase have an ESP8266 library on Github which will get you started. What I like about Firebase is the ease of integration with either Web App or Mobile App.

    ... and for completeness... adding one more... which is Blynk. Blynk is a customisable mobile app, which you can use to send commands to your ESP8266. It's another pub-sub type application. You simply use their esp8266 library and you'll be given a token via the mobile app which you insert into your esp8266 firmware to allow it to talk to the Blynk cloud and that gives you control.
