Arduino MKR Vidor4000 problems!!!!

rgiguere
rgiguere over 6 years ago

Ok yall, so I recently got my Arduino MKR Vidor4000. I figured that this would be a good board to start learning FPGA with. Apparently I was incorect in that assumption.

I can not even get a sketch to upload properly( Not even trying to use the FPGA chip yet). The instuctions on Arduino.cc home page say once you get the board setup

and installed to run the basic blink sketch for Arduino boards. When I attempt to do this it appears to compile and upload just fine but right after the sketch is finished uploading

it says "CPU RESET" and the sketch stops running and this happens in under 1 second every time. what is this "CPU REST" and why does it continue to happen? Also

I have noticed that the RED LED on the left side of the board flashes, and not do to the blink sketch it is not the "correct speed" it should blink every half second but its slower, more like

every 1.5 seconds and it has done this since I first plugged it in before even uploading anything.

Below is exactly what Arduino IDE is telling me after the upload of a sketch is done.

Sketch uses 10824 bytes (4%) of program storage space. Maximum is 262144 bytes.

Please anyone and everyone help! I can't even start to try to use or understand this board because of this and I have no idea where to start. Nooe of my other boards(NANO, ESP8266, UNO R3, ATMEGA) have this problem.

Hello, I see that it is an old post but I'm running in the same trouble, my MKR4000 boards (3 different boards) are all running much slower than my MKR1010 with the same code !?! Why ...? No idea yet …

try plugging in a lipo battery to its battery port. it might be that your usb port is providing insufficient power to power up the board

I had got the board almost like 1.5 years ago as soon as it was released. I have not yet updated my WiFiNINA firmware on the ublox esp32 chip and it seems that ble and wifi both work quite very well.
I have also used it with Blynk which needs more ram and long links and it works very well.

So, probably the recent versions of the firmware have some problems.

    Hi Vimarsh & All,

Ok but how can you explain that the small attached test code runs much faster on MKR1010 boards than on 4000 boards ?

Firmware up to date on the 4000 & tried both 1.1.0 and 1.0.0 versions of the Nina firmware, same result: with the MKR4000 it take ages to serve a web page !

Something wrong with the SPI between the M0 and the ublox ? MKR4000 board running at a much lower speed ?

    Cheers, J.

The MKR Vidor 4000 is designed much different from the other MKR boards so I am not sure you can compare this to something like a MKR WiFi 1010.  There is too much interaction with the FPGA that the other boards do not have.

For issues with the board, you should try the Arduino Forums or file an issue on their GitHub account.

jomoenginer is right! This is a social forum that tries to help when we can. The real engineers who design the boards are on the Arduino Forums which has the true insights.

Hi Jon, thanks for the advice, I've just posted on the Arduino forum https://forum.arduino.cc/index.php?topic=657807.0

It's true that it seems there is not a lot of activity around the MKR4000...

Checking the schematics of the board shows that the SPI (& Coms) go thru the FPGA instead of a direct connection M0+ - NINA as on the MKR1010...

But I suppose the FPGA can be configured "transparent" for the SPI/UART connections  (?)

The workaround could be another wifi module in direct connection (SPI or UART) with the M0+ but it will be a shame as there is already one !

Or consider using FPGA to handle transfers directly into shared memory. That way you can avoid the pass through problem(s).
