Home Automation System Outline

An idea I had for an arduino based, voice controlled, home (or room), automation system with MP3 alarm clock capabilities. Still a work in progress but any feedback is greatly appreciated.

  • This is supposed to be a long term project so I plan to take small steps toward this. First I want to become more familiar with linux programming. Then I plan to learn basic networking. Then alternative computer interfaces. Then tie it all together into home automation.

  • I recently had an idea like this (also somewhat based on iron man) howeveer in my head it wasn't just voice comands. The program was run by a MacBookPro and controlled via 2 forms. 1) a simple UI on an iPad, and 2) a voice controlled system which can be turned on or off via the iPad. Try taking a step further in building it with a clock set to your time and zulu time to allow it to perform steps at certain times. Such as making your coffee, starting your toast, pouring your ceral, this whole procces can be done using the MacBookPro as the base, and each arduino based controller using a WiFi link on one secure ntwork. Thus you can continue to add more to it without redoing a full program. Go another step further and allow it to sense where in your house you are, thus you can have th system turn on and off the lights for you, increase the volume of the t.v. when you aren't right next to it. This idea is based on the concept of having a fully automated house. Enjoy these ideas. After my current project this is actually the next for me to tackle.
