AVT9152 stocks and availability?

gmonroe

Is there any information that can be provided to show what "typical" or historical stocks of parts look like?  A 16-week lead during prototyping is something that would be insurmountable for us if this part goes out of stock.  Also, is there any information on how long this module will be supported?

If the availability of a part like this is important to your business then you need to establish a relationship with the supplier and manufacturer. If you are a small and new operation with no track record this will be very difficult to do.

You can help yourself by checking that the module you are buying uses parts from sources that you can identify and understand.

You should have  backup plan - can you use an alternative module or make the modules yourself if necessary.

If you can't sort out all these things then think very long and hard about a different route to production.

Choose chips in widespread use so that there is a good chance of the part remaining in production.

Choose manufacturers with a good reputation for continuity of supply.

Complex boards and modules are the most difficult parts to totally sure of. If just one part in a module is unavailable your supplier must re-design the module and do so in such a way as to satisfy all their customers. If you buy at component level you have  a much better chance of getting a substitute part that will work for your application.

Designing for part availability is a real challenge and will often rule out otherwise attractive solutions. Only you can balance up all the risk factors for your business. When I start a new design I often buy enough parts right at the start to get all the way to the first pre-production run.

All of the above is exactly why I asked the question.

Yes, we do have stock available to support immediate prototyping needs and possibly pilot production too.  It would be good if we have a better understanding of your production demand later.

As for how long this module will be supported in the market, the core devices used in the module, the nRF9160 and nRF52840 are fairly new product from Nordic Semiconductor.  Nordic product typically last around a decade at the least.  The module will continue to be manufactured as long as these devices are not discontinued.

Thanks for the reply.  Who would I speak to about our future plans without making it public on a forum?
