Zedboard NVRAM

Hi all,

Usually either with u-boot or others like the vxworks boot loader, you can change the default boot parameters and save them. However, this if your board doesn't have a NVRAM_DEVICE, to store the boot parameters, this cannot be done.

I have not been able so far to change permanently the boot parameters in my zedboard, so that after every reboot, it comes up with the default boot params.

Do you know if the zedboard comes with an NVRAM/ePROM or smth similar? Have you guys been able to permanently change boot params interactively?

    Hi temax,

    ZedBoard comes with a Spansion 256 Mbit QSPI flash which could be used as your non-volatile memory for storing U-boot environment settings.

    Support for this using the QSPI flash for storage is supported in the more recent releases of U-Boot.  In fact, I just tried this on my end and it worked out okay for me.

    Download the latest Linux release from the Xilinx wiki (I used the 2014.3 release since that is the latest that I have on my SD card) here:

    Copy the zed files from that archive to your SD card and then boot your ZedBoard in SD mode to the U-Boot prompt.

    To test on my end, I changed the serverip environment setting using this command:

    zynq-uboot> setenv serverip 192.168.1.100

    The I saved the settings to non-volatile memory using the saveenv command.

    zynq-uboot> saveenv

    The when I power down my ZedBoard and power back up to the U-Boot prompt, you can see the serverip setting gets persisted because it gets loaded by U-Boot at startup from the environment variables partition that was found in QSPI memory.

    Hi Kevin,

    Thanks for the detailed answer. I will try what you suggest, although in my case I am not using u-boot, but VxWorks bootloader. I am not sure how different it is, but I was able to actually flash the VxWorks bootloader into the QSPI flash and boot up from there. then, changed my boot parameeters, and once I rebooted....I got the default boot parameters again.

    The only way for me to get the boot parameters I wanted after a reboot, was to actually rebuild a new VxWorks bootloader, and then use the bootgen Xilins toold to generated boot image which has hardcoded the boot parameters I want.
