[Zedboard] Hardware Software codesign on a linux OS

Former Member
Former Member over 9 years ago

Hi I am a newbie to zedboard and Xilinx SoC
Currently, I have a project on zedboard to work with. I must implement both software and hardware program on zedboard and run it on an embedded OS.

Can you recommend me the documents to start with, which skills ,which tools do I need ? Thanks

I have backgrounds of embedded C,VHDL, Verilog, some of Linux for PC.

    Hello Dang,

I good place to start might be our Avnet Speedway workshops on Zynq Software and Hardware design that include hands on labs that are targeted to both the ZedBoard and the MicroZed boards:

Developing ZynqRegistered-7000 All Programmable SoC Software (Vivado 2013.3 and 2014.4.1)

Developing ZynqRegistered-7000 All Programmable SoC Hardware (Vivado 2013.3 and 2014.4.1)

Adam Taylor has an excellent blog on developing using the Zynq platform:

    http://zedboard.org/content/microzed-chronicles

There are some good videos and self paced tutorials on the Xilinx site. The videos on this page have some good info on using embedded OS:

    http://www.xilinx.com/training/zynq/index.htm

And if you are interested in using Linux you may want to take a look at the WindRiver Pulsar offering:

    http://microzed.org/content/wind-river

If you are a student or educator, the Xilinx University program has some good material as well:

And I am new to Linux too, where can I learn about Embedded Linux programming. Is it far different from a normal distro on PC like Ubuntu,Mint... ?
    Thanks

    Hello Dang,

I would suggest starting with the SW and then HW Speedway workshops mentioned above. With the Zynq both are equally important. You mention that you are familiar with both HDL and C coding, so that is a good basis to start.

Adam Taylor's blog is good as well, and is in more 'bite sized' portions.

Embedded Linux is somewhat different than a normal 'desktop' distro as you have to deal with limited resources such as memory and storage. The Xilinx videos above are a good place to start but that is a whole subject to itself. If some of the other forum users have some suggestions on books or sites for this please add to the thread.
