Software tools - Version issue

Hi,
I have the hardware setup of Zedboard but not the software tools included with the kit (It's probably lost). So I downloaded the 'Xilinx ISE Design Suite 14.7 full installer' for Windows but this did not include SDK, then I installed the 'SDK-2013.4 Full product installation' separately. I've been following the tutorials online and have following issues:

1. Lab 2: Running Hello_world application - I can't get it working on the board. I get the same error as many in the forum have posted "Connection to Board Failed , Failed to Open JTAG Cable Unknown Error and with 3 troubleshooting hints". I couldn't get any experiment working till Lab 5 due to the same issue but continued with the rest of the tutorials as UART was not the primary focus of my project.

2. Lab 8: Building a Boot Image for SD card - I tried creating the image on my own following the tutorials and also with the Lab 7 solution. But once I reach the stage of Experiment 2 in Lab 8 I can't view three files in the 'Create Zynq Boot Image' window. So the image that I create has only 2 of the three files (missing zynq_fsbl_0.elf). I can only see the DONE LED but not the text on terminal window. Also, tried to manually include the path of zynq_fsbl_0.elf to the LED_Dimmer.bif file. By doing this, the three files appeared in the 'Create Zynq Boot Image' window but even the DONE LED was lost along with the text on terminal window. Further to this, I tried to copy the BOOT.BIN image from the Lab8 solution, when I do that everything seem to work fine including the terminal window.

So could you please suggest me if the above problems are due to the software tools installed in bits or is it the version which is causing the problem. If I were to uninstall all the above tools and go with a fresh one, which version would you suggest?

Thanks
Mamatha

The ISE Design Suite 14.7 is at the same level of tool revision as the Vivado 2013.3 tool suite. ISE 14.7 is the expected to be the last revision of the ISE/PlanAhead too suite. So you are trying to use a version of SDK that does not match up with your hardware design tools.

I would recommend downloading the full version of the Vivado 2013.4 tools as all future development will be targeted to the Vivado too suite. If you prefer the ISE/Planahead tool flow then download the full version of the ISE 14.7 suite, including the SDK. Both tools can co-exist on the same computer, as can mulitple version of either tool suite, if you have the hard disk space to spare.

Once you have a complete installation of tools that match if you still have problems with the JTAG connection use the 'Xilinx Tools' from the SDK tool bar and use 'Configure JTAG Setup' to select the correct JTAG cable settings.

If your application boots and the FPGA is configured (Blue Done light on), but you do not have any text on your terminal, you might need to enable the persist mode of the Cypress USB to UART drive as described in the Cypress USB to UART Setup Guide here: http://zedboard.com/documentation/1521
