Licencing Requirements

Hello All,

Apologies if this a stupid question.

I am new into a role as Head of Electronics for the Medical Devices Unit(MDU), NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde. I really think the MDU should be evaluating the possibilities of what the Zynq device and the online community(like Zedboard.org) can do in developing medical devices.

As a result I think the MDU should purchase a ZED board. What I am not clear on is licensing arrangements for the ZED board. What SW comes with the ZED board? How restrictive is that SW? Do you need a seperate Chipscope license? Do you need a seperate licence for the ARM development tools? What are the restrictions on the free tools? Costs etc,etc

For all the british people on this forum you will be well aware of the financial limitations on the NHS, so I really need a good idea of future costs, if we go do the line of developing zynq based designs, so I can sell it as a good idea.

    The ZedBoard comes with a voucher for a  'device locked' (limited to the Z7020 device on the ZedBoard)  license for one seat of the Xilinx Vivado Design Edition tool suite which includes support for Vivado Analyzer (ChipScope equivalent for Vivado).

     

    The free WebPack edition of the Xilinx tools also supports the Zynq device on the ZedBoard but does not include a license for Vivado Analyzer. The Software Development Kit (SDK) is included with either version of the tools. So if the Xilinx tools are sufficient for your development you should be ready to go. If you do want the additional capabilities of the ARM development tools that would require an additional purchase.

    Something that might not be clear, at least it wasn't clear to me, is this ZedBoard-supplied license is also node locked in addition to being device-locked to the Z7020.  I consistently switch between my large desktop machine and my laptop and it becomes a hinderance sometimes.  Xilinx will allow you to move your license, but for a limited number of times.

    Thanks for your help. One last question: Do you know of an Altera equivalent to the ZED board. The reason I ask my background has been in Xilinx fpgas just prior to Zynq and Vivado. I have nothing against Altera, its just I've used Xilinx fpgas were I worked before. Like all these things I've stuck with what I know(which is what most of us do). They have a background in Altera(although only a few projects worth) in here. So I really need a comparison for pros and cons. They don't want to switch and I do.
