Help: Embedded programming via ethernet

Hi everyone,
what we are trying is the following:

- create a new .bit-file with planahead
- copy it to the SD-card via ethernet (ssh)
- run the new .bit-file
At this step linux (default) crashes and we are not able to go on.
We cannot use any USB input (there's no space), the only possible connection is ethernet.

1. Is it possible to restart Linux after it has crashed? I don't think so because ethernet its offline.
2. What do we have to change within the linux image to keep it running?

    Hi

    In answer to your questions, 1. I don't think it is possible and 2. read on.

    Linux crashes because hardware which it thinks it should be able to talk to doesn't exist any more.  You can use the default Linux image and ramdisk image with your custom hardware.  The device tree and BOOT.bin file need to be altered to work with your bit file.

    BOOT.bin
    There are guides to creating a boot image in the CTT, follow these and create one with a FSBL, the bit file and the u-boot.elf (in that order).

    devicetree_ramdisk.dtb
    This is more tricky.  You will need a Linux based workstation with the Zynq GNU Tools (which can be downloaded from Xilinx) and the Kernel image (probably best to get the digilent one).  Once there you need to find the device tree compiler (./scripts/dtc/) and build it using the Zynq GNU tools.  Then you can decompile your current .dtb file and remove some peripherals and re-compile it.

    Once you have both of these things replace the ones already on the SD card and linux should boot with your own hardware in the PL.  You may want to look into Linux driver development for your peripheral.
