Petalinux 2014.2 Ethernet Performance

Former Member
Former Member over 11 years ago

I ran iperf on the pre-built image included in the ZedBoard's Petalinux 2014.2 BSP and the performance is about half that attained using the older Ethernet Test Reference Design from this site. I rebuilt the 2014.2 image and got similar results. The PetaLinux 2014.2 image is only able to transmit/receive TCPIP at ~200Mbps, while the Ethernet test reference design runs above 450Mbps. Any ideas on what is limiting the ZedBoard's performance?

Thanks,
Joe

    Hi Joe,

Just to confirm, you have run the same iperf test on two separate Linux builds using the same hardware/network setup and you are seeing this difference in performance?

Linux Setup 1:  Pre-built image files from "PetaLinux 2014.2 BSP"

Linux Setup 2:  Pre-built image files from "Open Source Linux Ethernet Performance Test Tutorial"

I am just checking because I saw dramatic performance swings from the "Open Source Linux Ethernet Performance Test Tutorial" files when testing between different Windows/networking stations.  I finally settled on the workstation outlined in the tutorial documentation which has the following hardware:

    - Intelu00AE Core i5-2540M CPU @ 2.60 GHz
    - 8GB DDR3 Memory
    - Intelu00AE 82579LM Gigabit Ethernet Adapter
    - Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit SP1

But I have seen even better throughput numbers than mine from other community members when they test against iperf running on a PC running Fedora natively.

    Regards,

    -Kevin

Yes, I have 2 SD cards loaded with each image and the same statically linked version of iperf. I tested each image over a gigabit switch to a PC that can run iperf at wire speed. The best I have seen the 2014.2 PetaLinux image run at is 240Mbps, while the Open Source Ethernet Test Tutorial image consistently runs around 450Mbps. I also tried netperf and it returned similar results.

    Hi

Have you news on this subjec ?
I have the same problem and the same results with Microzed board and 7Z010.
With pre-built image files from "Open Source Linux Ethernet Performance Test Tutorial" => 450Mbps
and with Pre-built image files from "PetaLinux 2014.2 BSP" => 200Mbps
have you done special optimizations on "Open Source Linux" ?

There is a thread on the Xilinx Linux forum claiming that some kernel debug options were enabled in the default configuration of the 3.14 kernel which lowered the Ethernet performance. This change has since been reverted.

    Hi folks,

I just wanted to let you know that the "Open Source Linux Ethernet Performance Tutorial" has been migrated to Vivado 2014.4 and updated for ZedBoard, MicroZed, and added support for PicoZed.  We also added some different tests into the performance report in case you are looking for an idea on what numbers to expect in your own test experiments.

Using one of the later kernels is definitely helping performance numbers and by switching to a Linux PC that helps the numbers even more.

    Regards,

    -Kevin
